Taking a Look at Vinyl Fence Repair

September 20, 2017

Offering a beautiful aesthetic appeal, vinyl fences have a great look and are extremely sturdy. This means that they will typically stand the test of time. Mostly made of non-porous material, a vinyl fence is very durable and can withstand a lot of environmental factors. Occasionally, due to extreme factors, a vinyl fence can be damaged and will need to be repaired. Let's take a closer look at when this might become an issue that you will need to remedy.

There are a variety of environment situations that would cause the need for vinyl fence repair. For example, rain can cause ice to frost the fence posts and pull them out of the ground. To fix this problem, you would need to pull out the posts and then dig a hole deep enough to prevent frost from seeping into the fence. One of the most common vinyl fence repair methods is to fill the hole with cement in order to keep the post from popping out again. Other vinyl fence repairs can include repairing holes, digging new holes or making existing holes deeper.

What Does The Process Look Like?

To start repairing your fence, you would need to first wipe down the surface of the fence with a damp towel to remove any debris that is around the holes. Then you would sand a 2” area around the hole with some sandpaper. If the hole is larger than 1 ½” in diameter, you would use an expanding insulation foam. At this point, you would spray specialized foam into the hold slowly so that it can spread evenly inside of the hole.

After allowing the foam to dry overnight you would then saw away any excess foam that may have dripped outside of the hole. Next, you would sand down the surface and wipe away any dirt that is still there with a damp towel. Then the hole is filled with plastic body filler and dried for about an hour. Now, use sandpaper to sand down the body filler and paint. Once everything has been sanded down and reconstructed, either the new or old poles can be reinserted. It’s important to make sure the poles are placed inside the holes securely in order to prevent future damage from occurring.

Additional Problems to Consider

In some cases, a fence can begin to crack and will require vinyl fence repair. This can happen from falling branches or normal wear and tear after an extended amount of time. For vinyl fence repair work dealing with cracks, you will need to order replacement parts and fix the portion of the fence that is broken. When this happens, you will either have to replace a piece of the fence or the whole section depending on how big the crack is. Sometimes the caps on top of the fence can come off too. These decorative caps can be glued back on with special glue called PVC.

Of course, if you aren’t able to handle these issues yourself, you can always rely upon a professional to assist you. There are many handymen then can handle vinyl fence repair with ease.

Lastly, be sure to take care of the fence you have to ensure the best appearance and functionality. For example, it’s important to know that a vinyl fence will need to be cleaned frequently in order to maintain its sleek look.
